ORLANDO, Fla. — The tropics are becoming quieter as two named systems lose strength, although forecasters are keeping an eye on the southern Gulf for possible activity later next week.
Fay has weakened to a post-tropical system and is expected to continue fading over the next 24 hours or more. The system is no longer considered a tropical cyclone.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Hanna is continuing to pull away from the United States, moving east-southeast at about 5 mph.
Hanna is encountering dry air and increasing wind shear, both of which are working to weaken the storm.
Forecasters expect Hanna to weaken further on Wednesday and likely become post-tropical by Wednesday night or Thursday.
For now, the rest of the Atlantic Basin remains quiet.
However, forecasters are watching the southern Gulf, which could become an area to monitor during the second week of October.
Any potential development is still well out in time, and conditions could change significantly before then.
