Video shows coyotes roaming Altamonte Springs

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — Some Altamonte Springs residents are worried after spotting coyotes roaming their streets near Orange Avenue and West Town Parkway.

While those who spotted the coyotes said they weren't concerned for their safety, they worry the animals could prey on their small pets.

"One of them took off, but the other one just kind of stood there in the middle of the street, wasn't scared at all," said resident Kasey Stafford.

Stafford was able to record the coyotes on her cellphone as she pulled over the watch the animals.

"They were less than 100 yards from my house, and I have a small dog that is deaf and blind," she said.

Stafford said she has lived in Altamonte Springs for the past 13 years and has never seen coyotes.

"Never heard of any news stories of coyotes or anything like that ever being in the area," she said. "I actually thought they were more woodsy animals."

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials said coyote are present in every county in central Florida and are attracted to urban areas, because it's an easy source of food.

Officials said they aren't a threat to people but are more likely to be spotted this time of year, because they are frequently hunting for their pups.

"I think they are a little more scared of humans than they are of smaller animals," said Stafford.

Wildlife officials urge residents to put away trash and never leave food out.  As for small pets, they suggest keeping them inside at night.
