VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County EMS is reminding families and drivers to take extra precautions as children head out for trick-or-treating this Halloween.

EMS officials said dark costumes, reduced visibility and increased pedestrian traffic can create hazards, especially after the sun goes down.

Families are encouraged to add reflective material to costumes and treat bags and have children carry flashlights or glow sticks. Officials also recommend making sure masks do not block a child’s vision and that costumes and shoes fit properly to prevent trips and falls.

Children should use sidewalks and designated crossings whenever possible, look both ways before crossing the street and never assume a driver can see them. Younger children should also be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Volusia County EMS is also asking drivers to slow down in residential neighborhoods and watch for children who could unexpectedly enter the roadway, particularly near intersections, driveways and parked vehicles.
