Police: Elementary school students safe after bus crash, bus driver cited

Deland police are responding to a crash involving a school bus.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m. when a bus and car collided on Amelia Avenue. The bus was carrying 11 students from George Marks Elementary School, according to Volusia County Schools. None of the students on board were injured, the district said.

Police said the students on the bus were being released to their parents.

According to a preliminary crash assessment, the sedan was heading northbound and turning into a driveway when it was struck by the bus, which was traveling the opposite direction.

The bus driver told police they were looking in the rear-view mirror to check on the students shortly before striking the rear of the car.

The bus driver was cited for careless driving. They were not injured.

An adult and two minors in the car were transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital for minor injuries and are in stable condition, police said.
