Family of kindergartner who died minutes after getting off school bus suing Orange County School Board

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The family of a kindergartner who died minutes after getting home from school is suing the Orange County School Board.

Jaleah Florence’s family said they weren’t made aware of just how sick the girl was when she was sent home from Lake Silver Elementary School on the bus.

In the lawsuit, which lists the school health assistant, bus driver and bus monitor by name, the family claims the school district was negligent and didn’t do enough to help the “obviously ill kindergartner.”

The lawsuit claims the Orange County School District Parent Guide requires that "an ill child be picked up from school and/or that 911 be summoned."

The family said neither happened.

Jaleah’s family is suing for more than $30,000 to pay for medical and funeral expenses after the girl’s death in 2018.
