DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The NASCAR driver who hit Ryan Newman’s car during a massive crash at the end of the Daytona 500 on Monday night is speaking out.

Corey LaJoie said he couldn’t avoid hitting Newman and he didn’t even know who he hit at the time of the crash.

"You're concentrating on trying to get a good finish and nobody realizes how fast 200 miles an hour is or how light or how uncontrollable these cars are when you get out of shape,” LaJoie said. “The fact that he's still with us and hopefully can make a full recovery is just a testament to the NASCAR R&G Group and how safe they're trying to make these race cars.”

LaJoie believes NASCAR will now evaluate his and Newman's cars.
