VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — UF/IFAS Extension Volusia County will host public education programs in September on topics like hurricane preparedness, homebuying, urban agriculture, coastal conservation, and more.
September program schedule
- Financial well-being: Lisa Hamilton will lead a free virtual workshop on budgeting and goal-setting from noon to 1 p.m. and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
- Urban chickens: The Backyard Urban Chicken Program will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the UF/IFAS Extension office, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand. Ashley Stonecipher will discuss breeds, housing, health care, nutrition, manure management, food safety and zoning requirements. The cost is $15 per household.
- Hurricane preparedness: Kalan Taylor will host a free workshop from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at the Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St. Topics include emergency kits, evacuation planning, home safety and insurance.
- First-time homebuyers: A virtual, two-part class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays, Sept. 11 and 18. The eight-hour course costs $10 per household and fulfills education requirements for some federal down payment and closing-cost assistance programs through Volusia County and the city of Deltona. A Spanish-language version will be offered from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 17 and 24.
- Introduction to ruminants: Stonecipher will lead this online class from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. The session costs $7.18 and is the third in a five-part series on livestock care, sustainable land management and regulations for selling farm products.
- Florida’s coral reef: Sea Grant Agent Carolyn Kovacs will present a free webinar from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, on protecting Florida’s coral reef.
- Professional continuing education: Sports Turf and Athletic Field CEU Day will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the DeLand extension office. The $70 fee covers topics related to athletic field and golf course management. Payment will be accepted at the door by cash or check.
- Ocean-to-estuary walk: Kovacs will lead a free coastal walk from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, beginning at Michael J. Crotty Bicentennial Park in Ormond Beach.
- Living shorelines training: A two-day practitioner course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the UF/IFAS Extension Flagler County office. The $50 course includes continuing education units and a field trip to a living shoreline at Tomoka State Park.
