Man dead after confrontation with a friend involving a pitchfork, deputies say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Volusia County Sheriff’s office is investigating the fatal shooting of an Ormond Beach man, which happened during an altercation with a friend.

According to deputies, the shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday on the 1100 block of Avenue I in Ormond Beach.

The shooter, a 34-year-old man, told deputies that he and his friend, William Bay, 34, were outside his home when Bay pointed a pitchfork at him in a threatening manner.

The shooter, who was armed with a handgun, told Bay to put down the pitchfork, and he did.

According to deputies, the shooter said Bay advanced toward him aggressively, and he fired his gun at him. The shooter told detectives he was in fear for his life and his wife’s, who was inside the residence at the time of the incident.

The shooter contacted law enforcement and remained on the scene.

Bay, who lived in a separate structure on the property, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said no charges have been filed at this time. This is an active investigation, and the names of the parties involved are not being released at this time.
