Protesters demand more COVID-19 transparency from Volusia County Schools

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Some people in Volusia County are not happy with the way the school district has handled the COVID-19 situation since reopening last week.

They protested outside Tuesday’s board meeting, calling for more transparency from the district.

They also want the board to replace the interim superintendent and a cleaning company.

The protestors wanted to see the board open these meetings to the public. They’re all virtual right now.

The chairwoman said there will be changes next week, and if the cleaning company cannot get the job done, the board will find another one that can.

Protesters said they don’t believe the interim superintendent should get a $50,000 raise to fill in for the superintendent, while teachers are getting the same pay to do more.

They also want the district to report its COVID-19 numbers daily as well as its quarantine numbers, so parents can make informed decisions on whether to send their children to school.

The lack of cleaning in the classrooms is another concern, after some teachers have claimed their classrooms not been properly cleaned.
