Detective Adam Gossett had been out having dinner with his family when he passed the two-car crash on Interstate 95 heading north around 9 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. Gossett was the first to arrive at the scene.
The off-duty detective “ran into action just moments after” occupants began exiting a Ford Eco Sport SUV, the sheriff’s office said.
Gossett saw two children with injuries from the wreck leaning against the car. Gossett and the children’s father both grabbed a child and moved them away from the fire and off the interstate to a grassy area near the weigh station entrance, where they were safe, according to the sheriff’s office.

As first responders from the sheriff’s office and Flagler County Fire Rescue arrived to provide treatment, Gossett used his shirt to help stop the bleeding in one of the people involved in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies arrived at the scene and used fire extinguishers to knock out the fire.

“I’m very proud of Detective Gossett and everyone that responded,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a news release. “A deputy sheriff is never off duty and this is a great example of responding to an emergency even while technically ‘off duty.’”
The children involved in the crash were transported for medical treatment. In all, six people were involved in the crash, four of whom suffered minor injuries.
The crash is being investigated by Florida Highway Patrol.
