Windermere house fire kills elderly couple

WINDERMERE, Fla. — Two people are dead after a house fire in Windermere early Saturday, according to police.

Police said they found a 71-year-old man and a 69-year-old woman dead inside the home on the 1000 block of Main Street.

Police identified the couple as Ken and Susan Ward.

Windermere mayor Gary Bruhn described the two as inseparable.

"I've known these individuals for half my life," said Bruhn. "You didn't see one without the other, they come to council meetings. anywhere you saw them they were together."

The State Fire Marshal is conducting a death investigation. Police said there is no indication of foul play.

Neighbors said the two had lived on the block for decades.

Ocoee and Orange County firefighters responded to the home a little after 12:45 a.m. and found the house almost entirely engulfed in flames.

"I was shocked how quickly the house was engulfed in flames and how high the flames were above the tree line," said Doug Bowman, neighbor.

Windermere police who arrived on scene attempted to locate any occupants and enter the home, but the engulfed house made it too dangerous.

"Ken loved the town, his father lived here. His wife was very sweet," said Bowman.

Investigators still have not determined a cause for the fire.
