WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — The city of Winter Garden is trying to cut down on advertisements that are left in residents' driveways, Channel 9 learned.
Many of the bagged advertisements end up discarded in the street or along sidewalks. Resident Sharon Lambert thinks something should be done about the piled-up ads.
"They are ignoring this sign, and we do have people who come in here and say, 'You can't stop us,'" Lambert said.
Lambert wants the city to intervene. She's against the advertisements because they can't be canceled when someone goes out of town.
"They sit there and they pile up. Then someone who is looking for a property to break into will say, 'Oh, looks like nobody's home,'" Lambert said.
A few other cities, including Altamonte Springs, have ordinances that regulate the advertisements.
Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoeffer said the ordinance would give the city power to go after advertisers who continue to leave ads after they've been told to stop.
"Initially, we would probably issue a warning. Then with subsequent violations, we could go all the way up to a $5,000 fine," Bollhoeffer said.
City leaders will consider the ordinance at a meeting on Thursday.
