WINTER PARK, Fla.,None — A recently released lawsuit, which had been sealed for more than a year, claims Winter Park Urology defrauded Medicare out of millions of dollars.
The lawsuit was filed by a former director of the company on behalf of the federal government.
Winter Park Urology and its subcontractor, Radiation Oncology Consultants, provide services to thousands of cancer patients across Central Florida.
The former employee claimed in the suit that he was fired after raising concerns about fraudulent charges.
The lawsuit contends the clinics compromised patient safety by performing radiation therapy without a doctor's supervision. It also alleges the clinics submitted false or fraudulent payment claims and received millions of dollars from Medicare and other federal programs.
Patients of Winter Park Urology said they are concerned about the allegations, if they're true.
"It's wrong," said Dave Jansen, Winter Park Urology patient. "The doctor needs to be there especially if you are doing that kind of work."
Lawyers for the former employee and Winter Park Urology would not comment on the lawsuit.
Radiation Oncology Consultants filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. It claimed their employees never engaged in any fraudulent activity.
The Department of Justice is monitoring the case.
