BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A woman has been arrested after deputies say she struck and killed a horse with her vehicle and then drove away from the scene.
According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened Wednesday night on Lake Washington Road when a witness reported seeing a vehicle hit a horse and leave the area.
Deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene and found the horse dead.
Investigators later located the suspected vehicle and driver at a nearby residence. Sheriff Wayne Ivey identified the driver as Anne Cross, who was arrested on charges of DUI, refusal to submit to testing, and DUI with property damage.
Deputies said Cross initially told investigators she was driving home when “something” landed on the hood of her car and believed it may have been a deer.
However, authorities noted the vehicle had extensive damage, including a crushed hood and heavily damaged windshield. Deputies also reported observing signs of impairment, including glassy eyes and slurred speech.
According to the sheriff’s office, Cross refused both field sobriety exercises and a breath test.
The Florida Highway Patrol is handling the traffic crash investigation, while the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office conducted the DUI investigation.
The incident remains under investigation.
