PINE HILLS, Fla. — A woman was struck by a car and killed as she was crossing a busy road in Pine Hills Wednesday night, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.
The crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. on Pine Hills Road.
Troopers said the woman tried to walk across five lanes of traffic and was not in a crosswalk.
“From what witnesses are telling us, she didn’t really look. She just kept walking straight forward. She’s crossed mid-block into the path of a vehicle,” said Lt. Channing Taylor of FHP.
According to reports, the car was heading north on Pine Hills Road toward Silver Star Road in the right turning lane when the woman crossed from the west side.
She got in the car’s path and was struck, becoming trapped underneath, troopers said.
A Good Samaritan helped with the initial rescue, by running to get his hydraulic jack in his car to try and lift the car off the woman.
It's not known how long she was under there, and even though fire rescue and EMS worked tirelessly to free her, she died on the way to the hospital.
Troopers worked the scene for several hours and interviewed witnesses and the distraught driver.
Troopers said the death of the woman was tough, especially after it has ramped up efforts trying to get the message across about pedestrian safety.
“We’re trying to upgrade these intersections, do absolutely everything we can, but we need people to be patient and walked the extra 50 feet to the intersection and cross at the intersection,” Taylor said.
The driver is not expected to face charges.
Authorities have not identified the victim and said the crash is still under investigation.
