LAKE NONA, Fla. — A “final mile” ceremony was conducted for two local veterans this week at the Orlando VA Medical Center in Lake Nona.

The “final mile” ceremony happens when a fallen veteran has not been claimed by their family.

Organizers said the “final mile” ceremony is a way to make sure the veterans receive the final salute and honor they deserve.

“You matter to us, you matter to our country,” said organizer Craig Daughtery. “You have made a difference; we are here to let you know you’re not alone in these final moments. We stand with you, we remember you.”

The fallen veterans have since been taken to the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, where they will be laid to rest.
