One person killed and four others injured in Marion County crash, troopers say

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A fatal crash in Marion County left one person dead and four others injured, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened Friday night on State Road 40, just east of SE 196th Terrace Road around 10:40 p.m.

According to troopers, two vehicles were traveling eastbound on SR-40 when one of the cars attempted to pass the car in front of it. That car collided with the front of a third car that was traveling westbound.

The first car that attempted to pass, crashed into the second car also traveling eastbound, which then caught fire.

The 40-year-old driver of the car attempting to pass was not wearing his seatbelt and was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center in critical condition, troopers said.

The 55-year-old driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Troopers said the 17-year-old driver of the vehicle traveling westbound was also not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The vehicle’s other occupants -- a 17-year-old and a 2-year-old -- were both transported to the hospital in serious condition.

This crash remains under investigation.
