OCOEE, Fla.,None — The Orange County Fire Rescue bomb squad and officials from several agencies are investigating a suspicious device that was brought to the Ocoee Police Department building after being found in local park.
Emergency crews, a hazmat team, and the bomb squad responded to 646 Ocoee Commerce Parkway around 9:00 Saturday morning.
Ocoee police officials told WFTV a Parks and Recreation employee found the device in Central Park off of Flewelling Avenue and brought it to the police station in his truck. The bomb squad robot spent almost an hour going through items in the bed of the truck.
Several loud popping noises were heard around 11:00 a.m. when the bomb squad detonated the device. Officials say further testing will be required to determine what the device is, however it appears to look like a homemade pipe bomb.
Officials had to shut down Ocoee Commerce Parkway throughout the morning for the investigation.
Crews from the Ocoee Fire Department and Orange County Fire Rescue, and law enforcement from Ocoee police and the Orange County Sheriff's Office were all on scene.
