Space Mountain Reopens After Rider Found Unconscious

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Disney's Space Mountain roller coaster has now reopened after a woman was found unconscious after riding it Saturday morning.

The popular Walt Disney World ride was shut down after a the 48-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital, according to a Disney spokeswoman.

The guest was riding Space Mountain, an indoor roller coaster attraction in the Magic Kingdom section of the theme park, and was not responding when the ride came to an end, said spokeswoman Andrea Finger.

A Disney employee called for help and Reedy Creek Emergency Services sent rescue workers to the scene around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The woman was breathing on her own and transported to Dr. P. Phillips Hospital in stable condition, said Bo Jones, assistant chief for Reedy Creek.

"That means she wasn't getting any better or wasn't getting any worse," Jones said.

Disney released a statement that reads: "Our thoughts and concerns are with the guest and her family. We have sent a representative to the hospital to assist them with their needs."

Disney called the Orange County Sheriff's Office to help in the investigation. A spokesman said the agency's roll is minimal because a criminal act did not take place.

"It's tragic and I hope she's OK," said park guest Emma Miller of Oxford, England.

As a precaution, the attraction was closed and inspected. The ride remained closed throughout the day Saturday.

It is the third time Disney has closed the ride because of a situation involving a guest. In 2006, a 7-year-old boy fainted after riding Space Mountain. He later died at the hospital of natural causes. That same year, a 73-year-old man died due to a heart attack.
