FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Just before noon Tuesday, engine trouble led a plane to crash yards away from a Florida beach.
WSVN reported that the Federal Aviation Administration said the Piper PA 28 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean around 11:36 p.m.
Two men were on the plane that was flying from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were able to get out of the plane soon after it crashed.
The 19-year-old and 20-year-old men are student pilots, according to Miami Herald.
The pilot aimed to land on sand, but ended up 60 yards offshore in the Atlantic Ocean.
Lifeguard Marcel Lopez saw that the plane was flying low, and jumped from his post at Haulover Beach and into the water when he saw the plane crash.
"Suddenly I heard a big noise and then we saw them swimming," Lopez said.
The plane started sinking soon after Lopez got them men on his paddleboard.
One man had an injured hand and the other suffered a broken nose, but no other injuries were reported.
The FAA is investigating the crash and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause.
