TAMPA, Fla. — A couple brought together under horrific circumstances say they’re looking forward to brighter days ahead.

"Four years ago, I survived an attempted murder cause at the hands of my ex-boyfriend. I was stabbed 32 times," Melissa Dohme told KSTU. "I remember there were tons of police officers, ambulance, and fire rescue."

One of the first responders was Cameron Hill, a firefighter.

“I think it’s fate. He doesn’t know what it’s called. But it’s fate,” Melissa said.

Fate brought them together again 10 months later, when Melissa shared her story for the first time and Cameron was in the crowd.

“I was just overwhelmed with joy and feeling so blessed to meet them and say ‘thank you,'” said Melissa.

Cameron invited Melissa to have dinner with them at the firehouse, and the more they got to know each other, the more they realized they had in common.

“And this feeling that I was feeling was not just because he was someone who had saved me,” said Melissa. “I really had feelings for this man.”

The two have been together ever since. Cameron sat with Melissa through countless surgeries and physical therapy.

“He’s been by my side through it all, helping me, loving me,” said Melissa.

The two are now engaged and will tie the knot on March 5, 2017.
