1 dead, 7 injured in Oklahoma festival shooting; man arrested

TAFT, Okla. — One person was killed and seven others were injured after a shooting early Sunday at an outdoor festival in eastern Oklahoma, authorities said.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the festival was part of a Memorial Day event in Taft, KOKI-TV reported.

Update 12:12 a.m. EDT May 30: Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Edwards confirmed to KOKI that 40 shell casings, from four different caliber weapons, were found at the scene, indicating four separate weapons were fired.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that one of the victims wounded in the shooting is only 9 years old and the oldest is 56.

According to KOKI, the individual killed in the shooting was a 39-year-old Black woman.

Update 6:07 p.m. EDT May 29: A suspect surrendered to authorities in connection with the shooting in Taft that left one person dead and seven others injured.

Skyler Dewayne Buckner, 26, turned himself in to the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Edwards said. He was booked into the Muskogee County jail, KOKI-TV reported.

Original report: Two of the wounded victims were juveniles, according to the television station. The identities of the victims and the conditions of the survivors were unknown.

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight, and there were about 1,500 people in attendance at Taft’s Old Town Square, KOKI reported.

Members of the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office were also attending the event and immediately began rendering assistance, according to The Associated Press.

Witnesses told authorities that an argument was followed by gunfire, KOKI reported.
