VALDOSTA, Ga. — Two people are accused of discharging a gun at a South Georgia extended stay hotel while a 2-year-old child was in their room, authorities said.
Dequan Jacque George, 19, and Zaniyah Brianna Oliver, 18, both of Valdosta, were arrested on Dec. 23, according to Lowndes County online booking records. Both were charged with felony damage to property and reckless endangerment. George was also charged with theft by receiving stolen property for the firearm, online records show.
According to a news release, the Valdosta Police Department said that a patron at The Garden Villas called police after he heard a gunshot in the room next to his, resulting in a bullet coming through the hotel room’s wall.
Upon arrival, police found George, Oliver and the toddler inside the room, the Valdosta Daily Times reported.
According to the news release, officers also found a firearm that had been reported stolen from Cordele, about 90 miles north of Valdosta.
When George and Oliver refused to tell the officers what led to the shooting, they were arrested and booked into the Lowndes County Jail, WALB-TV reported.
The mother of the 2-year-old child was contacted and family members took custody of the toddler, police said.
