In a news release, Baton Rouge Police Department said on Friday that homicide detectives along with help from St. James Parish Sheriff Department detectives and deputies executed search warrants in the St. James Parish area. As a result of the search warrants, Nikeal Franklin, 19, and Jy’shaun Jackson, 19, were arrested. Police say their arrests were in connection with a shooting on Jan. 21 at 4619 Bennington Avenue.

On Jan. 22, gunshots were fired around 1:30 a.m. in the Dior Bar and Lounge, according to The Associated Press. 12 people were injured as a result of the shooting and most of their injuries were reportedly non-life-threatening. Three of those injured were in critical condition at the time of the shooting but their conditions have reportedly since improved.

The Baton Rouge shooting happened hours before a gunman killed 11 people and injured nine others in Monterey Park, California, at a Lunar New Year celebration, according to the AP.

Baton Rouge Police Department said that they believed the shooting was not random and it was “targeted,” according to the AP.

Sgt. L’Jean McKneely Jr. told the AP after the shooting that investigators believed the shooting was targeted at one person and bystanders were injured in the process.

Franklin has been charged with 12 counts of attempted first-degree murder and Jackson has been charged with 12 counts of principal to attempted first-degree murder, according to the AP.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released.
