Alleged robber, grocery store clerk reportedly shot, killed each other in Chicago

CHICAGO — During an attempted robbery, an alleged robber and a grocery clerk shot and killed each other.

According to The Associated Press, the shooting happened Friday night inside the El Barakah Supermarket in Chicago.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identities of the alleged robber as Nicholas Williams, 24, and the grocery clerk as Ali Hassan, 63, according to the AP.

Williams reportedly entered the grocery store around 6:20 p.m. and had a handgun on him. He attempted to rob the store. Hassan pulled a gun from his waistband and allegedly shot Williams in the chest, police said, according to the AP.

Williams then allegedly shot Hassan back in the chest and back. Williams ran from the store, police said, according to the AP. He reportedly collapsed about a block away and died from his injuries.

Hassan was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries, police said, according to the AP.

Two other people were in the store at the time of the shooting but were not injured, police said, according to the AP.

No further information has been released.
