According to Baltimore police, officers responded just before 2 a.m. EDT, WBAL-TV reported. Police said a bullet struck a window frame and then hit the woman in her left arm, according to the television station.

The woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment, WJZ-TV reported.

The woman’s son, Price Tyson, told WBFF-TV that his mother always reads before going to sleep in her first-floor bedroom.

“Around 1:30 last night, we heard a popping sound, and the next thing I know my mother started screaming so I ran downstairs,” Tyson told the television station. “She was sitting there, and her arm was bleeding. We wrapped her up. We weren’t sure it was a bullet wound at first, until I saw the bullet exit wound.”

Tyson said he later found a bullet on the floor of his mother’s bedroom, WBFF reported.

Price Tyson and his brother, Gregory Tyson, told WBAL that their mother was shaken up by the shooting.

“She’s 83 years old. She was freaked out of her mind. She was screaming, ‘Why me? Why me? Why me? What in the world is going on?’” Price Tyson told the television station. “(The) only thing that kept (the bullet) from penetrating into her, it hit the frame. It slowed it down and then ‘pop.’”

As of Friday morning, Baltimore police reported that 131 people had been fatally shot this year, a 3.1% increase over the same time period in 2021, WBFF reported. There also have been 276 nonfatal shootings, a 6.6% rise over last years.
