TRUCKEE, Calif. — The body of Rory Angelotta, who disappeared while skiing on Christmas Day, was found Saturday several miles from the Northstar California Resort.
Angelotta, 43, was reported missing after not showing up for dinner with friends on Dec. 25, and authorities believe he got lost during whiteout conditions, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.
Volunteers with Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue and Nevada County Search and Rescue found Angelotta’s remains, the newspaper reported.
The primary search effort was suspended Dec. 30, but teams expanded the search area on Saturday and brought in a rescue canine, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said in a prepared statement.
“Angelotta had traveled a considerable distance from the ski resort boundaries and the backside of the resort. It is possible Angelotta was attempting to find the neighborhood near Truckee when he succumbed to the elements,” the sheriff’s office stated.
According to USA Today, Angelotta moved to California from Colorado in 2021, and was managing a Surefoot ski shop.
“The Angelotta family is deeply touched by the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and support during this extremely difficult time and personally wants to thank everyone that accompanied in the search and assisted them during these last two weeks,” the family said in a prepared statement.
