In a Facebook post, the Gaffney City Fire Department said that they were called to help a 14-year-old who had fallen 40 feet down into a well. The teenager was treading water and holding on to pipes to stay above water at the bottom of the well.

A training officer said that the teenager had fallen into a cement well shaft after jumping on to the lid, which crumbled, WPDE reported.

Fire crews lowered a firefighter into the well and were able to rescue the teen that way, firefighters said in the post. The teen was taken to the hospital, but firefighters said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

The entire rescue took crews approximately 30 minutes, WYFF reported.

The Gaffney City Fire Department credited their training in their Facebook post, saying, “Our firefighters train often for these scenarios, that are not routine but they do happen. We’re proud of the professionalism showed by our crews.”
