His band Gerry and the Pacemakers was probably best known for the song “Ferry Cross the Mersey.”
He also had a stirring rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” which became the anthem of the Liverpool Football Club.
Marsden said he was inspired to cover the song after hearing it during the movie “Carousel.”
“So I went back and told my buddies ‘we’re doing a ballad called ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’,” he told the AP in 2018.
The band’s version was released in October 1963.
Gerry and the Pacemakers also had such hits as “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying,” “I Like it” and “How Do you Do It?”
The Beatles’ Paul McCartney said Marsden was “a mate from our early days in Liverpool” and called the band “our biggest rivals” locally, the AP reported.
Marsden is survived by his wife Pauline and two daughters.
