The Birmingport Fire Department in Bessemer received five packages this week from FedEx that were addressed to other locations, AL.com reported. Three were received on Monday and two were delivered on Thursday, according to WBMA-TV.

After contacting FedEx to schedule a pickup time for the packages, members of the fire department decided to deliver the packages on Christmas Eve when FedEx never scheduled a pickup time, the television station reported.

“We reached out to FedEx to let them know that they had dropped off the packages to the wrong location and we know they’re busy and said that they would schedule a pick-up time,” Deputy Fire Chief Wade Holley told WBMA on Friday. “We never heard back from FedEx, so we took it upon ourselves just to go on and deliver the packages, since today’s Christmas Eve.”

The fire department included a note with the packages, letting the recipients know they wanted to make sure they arrived before Christmas Day, AL.com reported.

“It was generous of them to do that. They didn’t have to do that. They could’ve just waited on FedEx,” Bessemer resident Melissa Joyner told WBMA. “It was actually the second package to a present, so I kind of needed that package because that was one of the main parts of it.”

“The security and timely delivery of our customers’ shipments is a top priority, and we apologize for the inconvenience caused by this situation,” FedEx said in a statement. “We appreciate the efforts of the Birmingham Fire Department to assist with this matter and are looking into the circumstances behind the misdeliveries.”
