A jog along a California beach turned into a rescue operation — not for the jogger, but for a trapped dog he found.

San Francisco Animal Care and Control shared the story of Gwen and her lucky day on Instagram.

The rescue center said a jogger, identified by Runner’s World as Brian Glover, was running on the beach on Jan. 16 and heard a “muffled bark.” When he looked, he didn’t see a dog or person in sight. Instead of just ignoring the noise, Glover decided to look around and amazingly noticed a dog’s face peering out from under the rocks.

“Not only did it sound like the dog was in trouble, but it was also muffled, as if it was stuck inside something,” Glover told Runner’s World.

The rocks were near a sewage treatment plant, and while at the time it was low tide, the water was closing in on where the dog was stuck, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The jogger called animal control for help and an officer responded. Officer Carlos Ortega was able to find the dog — a 1-year-old springer spaniel named Gwen — who had been reported missing by her family, the Chronicle reported.

Ortega moved several large rocks to be able to get to Gwen and pull her to safety, shelter officials said.

Animal control officials are not sure how Gwen got stuck but think that maybe she dislodged a large rock and fell before the rock covered her escape.

Gwen was reunited with her family after her rescue.
