Childress, who sits on the board of Ammo, Inc., a US-based company that produces ammunition, said in an interview Wednesday that he had reached out to the company’s chairman, Fred Wagenhals, after he heard Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s comments about needing ammunition to defend his country.

Zelenskyy reportedly received an offer from the U.S. to evacuate him from Ukraine as Russian troops massed to enter the country. “I need ammunition, not a ride,” he is said to have responded.

“I said, ‘Fred, we got to help these people. They need ammunition,’” Childress said in an interview on Wednesday morning. “He stepped right up … Now we’re turning our production to this as our No. 1 priority.”

Childress said that he will be working with a private company to get the ammunition to Ukraine as quickly as possible.
