NEW YORK — Investigators have detained a person of interest in connection with the weekend shooting death of a 22-month-old boy in New York's Brooklyn borough, authorities said Thursday.
According to WPIX-TV, authorities are questioning a suspected gang member, whom police have not charged or publicly identified, in the Sunday night shooting that left Brownsville toddler Davell Gardner Jr. dead and three men injured.
According to WNBC and WPIX, the incident occurred after 11 p.m. Sunday as several family members gathered on a Madison Street sidewalk near Raymond Bush Park. Two men approached the family and started shooting, striking the child and three men, ages 27, 35 and 36, police said.
The toddler, who was struck in the stomach, died at a nearby hospital, the news outlets reported. The men's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, authorities said.
On Tuesday, the New York Police Department took to social media to release surveillance footage from the scene. The Sergeants Benevolent Association later announced up to $16,000 in reward money "for the apprehension and indictment" of Gardner's killers.
