Sauer Brands has recalled 29 Spice Hunter herb and spice products due to potential salmonella exposure.
In a statement issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company confirmed its supplier of organic parsley triggered the recall after notifying Sauer of the possible salmonella contamination.
No illnesses linked to the products have been reported, but out of an abundance of caution, the company also recalled a host of other Spice Hunter spices and spice blends produced at the same facility on the same day as the potentially contaminated parsley, including Herbs de Provence, Cilantro, Saigon Organic Cinnamon, Pumpkin Pie Spice and Everything Bagel Crunch. All of the recalled products, sold at retail stores in more than 30 states, had a “best by” date of August or September 2022 and lot codes 20217C, 20220C, 20269C and 20270C. The states affected include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
“Although herbs and spices are dried and used only in small amounts, salmonella can live in dried products and it doesn’t take much of the pathogen to make you ill,” James E. Rogers, director of food safety testing and research at Consumer Reports, stated.
Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that in extreme cases can require hospitalization. Symptoms can appear anywhere from six hours to six days after exposure and can last about four to seven days, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Consumers are encouraged to return the recalled products to the stores where they were purchased for full refunds. They may also contact Sauer Brands at 800-444-3061.
