The automaker’s report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the vehicles affected by the recall were produced without a protective cover over a gateway control module, Car and Driver reported.

According to the report filed with the NHTSA, the affected vehicles included certain A6 and A7 sedans manufactured between 2019 and 2020; the A6 Allroad, S6 and S7 vehicles built between 2020 and 2022; and the RS6 and RS7 vehicles made in 2021 and 2022. According to Consumer Reports, the A6, with 32,585 vehicles, is the model most affected by the recall.

A total of 50,883 vehicles are included in the recall, according to the website.

The module is situated under the rear middle seat, Car and Driver reported. If liquids get into the module, a short circuit could cause the gateway to turn off, according to the website. That would put the vehicle into “limp-home” mode.

Motorists are still able to steer the vehicle and the brakes will remain operational, but power from the engine will be reduced, the report to the NHTSA stated.

Audi said there have been 46 reported cases in the U.S. through October but no injuries or crashes.

Audi officials said that “even though several systems are displaying a malfunction, not all of these systems are impacted.” There have been 46 potentially related claims due to this problem.

Models built since April 4, 2022, have included the new protective cover and are not expected to have the issue, according to Consumer Reports.

Audi plans to notify owners in late January 2023.
