INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The temperature at kickoff for Super Bowl LVI came close to a record, but not quite.
Update 6:24 p.m. EST Feb 13: The temperature at kickoff at SoFi Stadium was 82 degrees, falling short of the hottest Super Bowl ever, The Associated Press reported.
The hottest Super Bowl game at kickoff remains Super Bowl VII, which also took place in Southern California. The Miami Dolphins and Washington squared off at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1973, with kickoff a steamy 84 degrees.
Original report: Sunday’s game could set a record for the hottest kickoff temperature in the game’s history. The National Weather Service in Los Angeles has issued a heat advisory for the Los Angeles area, with temperatures expected between 85 to 90 degrees in parts of Southern California, the Los Angeles Times reported.
At SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, where the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals will meet, temperatures could be hovering around 80 degrees, the newspaper reported. SoFi Stadium is not a domed stadium, although it does have a roof that can shield players and fans from the elements.

The heat advisories remain in effect, and gusty winds that fueled small brush fires last week have begun to calm somewhat, according to The Associated Press.

Los Angeles International Airport recorded a high of 89 degrees on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. That topped the record of 88 set in 1977.

Temperatures are expected to drop after the Super Bowl’s final whistle. Temperatures in the area are expected to drop into the 60s with a slight chance of rain, the Times reported.
