According to KPRC and KHOU, the unnamed female calf, born to first-time mother Tupelo by artificial insemination, arrived about 11 a.m. Wednesday at the zoo’s McNair Asian Elephant Habitat.

Tupelo, 10, and the 284-pound baby will “spend several days bonding before they are ready to join” the other 10 elephants in the zoo’s herd, the attraction said in a news release.
“Our animal team is thrilled that the birth has gone smoothly,” Lisa Marie Avendano, the zoo’s vice president of animal operations, said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to watch Tupelo and her baby bond and introducing her to Houston.”
The zoo said it plans to announce the calf’s name on its social media pages.
