In a news release, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said it was first called just before 5:30 p.m. on June 12 for a report of several people in the water just east of Beer Can Island. When the sheriff’s office aviation unit flew over the scene, it saw “a boat was upside-down in the water, with several people swimming around it.”

While the aviation unit was above the scene, a civilian boat came to the scene and immediately began lifting people out of the water and into the craft, WTSP reported.

Video shared by the sheriff’s office on YouTube shows the good Samaritans pulling people in life jackets out of the water, while others cling to the upturned boat.

When The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit arrived, deputies rescued the two men still hanging on to the upturned boat, deputies said in a news release.

“Thanks to the willingness of some local boaters to help out, a group of 11 people, consisting of men, women, and children, were saved after they were stranded in the water when their seacraft capsized,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.

One of the men rescued said he had chest pains and shortness of breath and was taken to a hospital, WFTS reported.
