ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Police at the University of Central Florida said they were able to use tracking software on a student's stolen laptop to find a thief.
Reema Rahall is a nursing student at UCF and had her laptop was stolen when she stepped away for a moment from the UCF lirbary.
"It's something you don't think about. You get up for two minutes and you don't take your stuff and it's gone," said Rahall.
Luckily she had installed tracking software on her laptop and police were able to follow it to a local pawn shop.
The owner of the pawn shop identified Kevin Carlos Mills as the seller of the laptop. Police then went back to the library and spotted Mills. He ran, but was later picked up at his Winter Park apartment.
Police said Mills stole Rahall's computer and could be responsible for stealing at least five other laptops from the library.
"The computer outsmarted the computer thief in this particular case if you want to call it that way," said Sgt. Troy Williamson, of the UCF Police Department.
UCF police advise all students to register their computers, cell phones and even bicycles on an online property registration program. It can track down those things if they're swiped for up to four years.
