With weeks to go, both presidential campaigns investing heavily in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — With fewer than 40 days to go until election day, both presidential campaigns are moving money around and investing heavily right here in Florida.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden carried Florida twice, but Donald Trump flipped it red in 2016. Now, both campaigns are spending big to win the Sunshine State, and in doing so, pulling money out of other places.

“There’s a lot of money being moved around, and a lot of it’s being moved into Florida, and that doesn’t surprise people who have been following elections over the last two decades, and President Trump’s chances of winning really hinge on it,” Ben Taber of Advertising Analytics says.

Taber adds that as the race enters the last five weeks, campaigns are zeroing in on where they need help, and where they can afford to pull back.

“Sometimes as a campaign you have to make hard decisions, and putting money into Florida is really key right now; it’s the largest swing state,” Taber says.

As of the most recent filing, the Biden campaign has more cash on hand, but neither campaign is in danger of running out of money.

But that cash advantage means Biden can play in more states, pulling money out of only two and increasing spending everywhere else, with a heavy focus on Florida.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign is also focusing on Florida, but has pulled back spending in the Rust Belt.

“They’re going dark in Iowa and Ohio...and they’re pulling money out of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and they’re putting it primarily into Florida, but also Arizona and North Carolina,” Taber says.

2020 is poised to shatter records with candidates and campaigns projected to spend almost $7 billion this election cycle on ads.

The spending is an indication of just how close many races are and how many states are up for grabs in the presidential election.
