ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A woman is dead Monday morning after a driver hit and killed her while she was crossing the street in her motorized wheelchair.
Troopers said 67-year-old Katherine Scheungrab was trying to cross Orange Blossom Trail near Holden Avenue on Sunday afternoon when she was hit. They think Scheungrab failed to yield the right-of-way and traveled into the path of Naida Moreno's vehicle.
The crash left pieces of the wheelchair lying in the road.
"I seen the impact. I was driving on the other side of the road. I heard the impact and seen the body fly into the air," said Gordy Fernandez, eyewitness.
Eyewitnesses tried to help Scheungrab as they waited for rescue crews to arrive at the scene. She was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where she later died.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers say charges are pending.
