ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — A national pet store chain is facing a lawsuit after a woman slipped in a puddle of dog urine on the floor at a store in Orange County and the woman said the company owes her money.
A Clermont woman said she was severely injured inside a Winter Garden Petsmart, when she slipped on dog urine walking through the store.
"I'd say you should be careful, but it doesn't surprise me that someone is trying to take advantage of the system," said a customer.
Customers from the pet store said they got a kick out of the news of a lawsuit filed against the Petsmart Corporation in Orange County court.
The woman filing the lawsuit, Marilee Cappello said last year, she injured her back, knee and foot when she slipped on a pet mess that was not cleaned up. She claims her medical bills topped $150,000.
The pet store chain is known for allowing pets inside the store, and it's a policy customers like.
Attorney's for Petsmart responded to the suit and said the woman should have known that with pets come pet messes and it's clear from the sign on the door that pets are welcome.
Customers WFTV spoke to considered the suit frivolous but were not surprised someone used the pet policy to make a legal claim.
"I think it's kind of silly. I like bringing my dog when I come. I think people tend to try to make a few bucks off anybody because of accidents," said Petsmart customer Sam Davis.
Cappello's attorney said they had no comment on the incident.
Petsmart management told WFTV that the woman had been a long-time customer before the accident happened.
