FHP investigating fatal crash in DeLand involving transit van

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A woman in her 90s died after a crash in DeLand Tuesday evening.

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were called to the intersection of South Adelle Ave. and West Beresford Rd. around 6:30 p.m. for a crash between two vehicles.

It involved a 2006 Jeep Liberty and a Ford transit van.

Troopers say the driver of the Jeep, identified as a 29-year-old woman from DeLand, was southbound on Adelle Ave. headed for the intersection with Beresford Rd.

At the same time, the transit van being driven by a 38-year-old DeLand man was traveling east on Beresford Rd. towards the intersection.

According to FHP, their preliminary investigation shows the jeep ran a stop sign and collided with the left side of the van, forcing it off the road and into a traffic sign and power pole.

A passenger in the van, identified by FHP as a 93-year-old woman from DeLand, died at the scene of the crash. According to a crash report, troopers don’t know yet whether she was wearing a seatbelt.

The man driving the van was taken to Halifax Hospital with serious injuries while the woman driving the jeep was taken to Advent DeLand Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The intersection was blocked while FHP Traffic Homicide Investigators processed the scene, but the roadway has since reopened.

The investigation into exactly what led up to the crash is ongoing.
