VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A semitractor trailer and several other vehicles were involved in a crash Friday morning.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the crash involves five vehicles that were traveling eastbound on I-4 at mile marker 131, near the I-95 interchange in Daytona Beach.
Troopers said preliminary information indicates one vehicle rear-ended a second vehicle. Two other vehicles, plus a semitractor trailer, attempted to avoid the collision and crashed.
"There was a tractor trailer on its side. There was a pickup truck that was in pretty bad shape, it looked like it had been hit from two or three different sides," driver John Holcomb said.
The semitractor trailer went through the guardrail and ended up on the inside shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-4.
Holcomb said traffic was stopped on the highway for about an hour and 45 minutes.
"It was getting to be a little party. There was a couple of people who had kids in their vans and so they started getting toys and they had their little sword fight going on with their Jedi sticks," Holcomb said.
Three people have been taken to the hospital; one of them is in critical condition.
Troopers said the semitractor destroyed eight sections of concrete barriers and sent debris across the interstate. They said it was a slow cleanup, even with heavy equipment.
All lanes reopened around 4:50 p.m. Friday.
