OUC crews restore power to nearly 40K; 100K remain in dark

People across Central Florida are getting prepared for Hurricane Irma when it makes landfall Sunday into Monday.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Utilities Commission announced Monday night that nearly 40,000 customers had their power restored as workers spent the day assessing damage and removing trees.

At their peak, power outages due to Hurricane Irma topped 145,000, the OUC said in a statement.

By the end of the day, that number had been reduced to about 108,000.

"Our team of assessors identified significant damage to OUC equipment including broken and leaning poles, blown transformers, and downed wires," the statement said. "In addition, transmission lines were repaired and power was restored to critical facilities including water plants, wastewater, lift stations, hospitals, emergency shelters, police, and fire.

"The number of these facilities impacted is larger than what we experienced with Hurricane Charley."

With crews returning to work at 6 a.m. Tuesday, OUC officials said they estimated that remaining customers should have power restored some time Tuesday evening.
