How to talk to children about George Floyd protests, racism

With footage of the protests and depictions of racism being seen on television and social media, children might have questions about what they’re seeing. And parents might be wondering about the right way to explain it to them.

Dr. Lynn Wadelton, a clinical psychiatrist at First Coast Therapy, says the video of George Floyd and other protests can be scary for kids, and can lead to anxiety.

“You want to make sure that your child knows the adults are paying attention,” she said. “And like always we are keeping our children safe and we are guiding our children."

Wadelton says books can help explain racism and protesting, and you can also explain things through your own life experiences.

“As a parent, you may want to share with things you’ve seen in the past,” Wadelton said, adding that those talks can start as early as 2 years old.
