50-Year-Old Longwood Elementary School Closed

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — It's the last day of school for Seminole County students on Wednesday. But for Longwood Elementary school, Wednesday was the last day it will ever be open.

"It's kind of sad," said Jared Weed, a Longwood student.

Earlier in May of 2011, school leaders decided to close the 50-year-old school because of budget cuts. WFTV was there when teachers protested the move and took their fight to school leaders. Officials said that in the end, they lost the battle. Families said Wednesday was an emotional day.

"I don't like it because I have one more year and then I go to middle school and I would like to stay here for at least another year," said Logan Coppola, a Longwood student

The students still don't know what school they will be going to next year, officials said. The move is expected to affect students at five different elementary schools. On Thursday night, a meeting will be held to try and figure out final rezoning and plans that may force 2,000 students to transfer schools in the fall.

"We are teaching these students like anyone else make new friends, new experiences new teachers," said Betty Orooji, Longwood's PTA President.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:00pm Thursday at Longwood Elementary.
