9 Investigates new OUC solar artwork in Orange County

9 investigates found that nearly $500,000 is being spent by the Orlando Utilities Commission to add solar art around the city of Orlando.

OUC placed the first one at the Citrus Bowl Monday.

The red solar art piece puts out about enough power to illuminate 10 light bulbs.

An OUC representative said the pieces are meant to be conversation pieces.

"Tens of thousands of people will see these during the bowl games. They are going to start the conversation about solar. These are high-visibility, high-impact solar projects," said Tim Trudell with OUC.

Other locations will include the Orange County Convention Center, the Lynx bus station, Florida Hospital downtown and the Lake Nona area.

The pieces cost about $25,000 each.

Officials said the purchase of the art won't mean a rate increase for OUC customers.

"It's not enough to impact our rates, but it's enough to impact our customers into the conservation world," said Trudell.

OUC officials said they are going to give UCF students a chance to design one of the solar art pieces.
