Cops: Wife Spiked Man's Coffee With Xanax

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla.,None — A woman accused of repeatedly spiking her husband's coffee with Xanax was charged with attempted murder on Thursday.

WFTV reporter Jeff Deal was in court on Thursday when Melissa Goetz made her first appearance, and he also talked to Goetz's husband, Donald, on the phone.

Donald Goetz said he does not think his wife tried to kill him. Goetz said he believes she was angry at him because they're going through a divorce and perhaps was just trying to make him lose his job.

However, investigators said what she did could have killed him.

Shortly after Donald Goetz left his Deltona home with his morning cup of coffee in his hand, he realized something wasn't quite right.

"Felt like I wanted to throw up, rubbery legs, wanted to fall down, crawl up under a tree and go to sleep," Donald Goetz described.

Goetz explained to Deal that he felt dizzy for a couple of days when he got to work. He said he didn't know why, until Wednesday, when he claims he learned his wife spiked his coffee with the powerful drug Xanax.

Donald Goetz said Melissa Goetz called his cellphone and didn't realize the call went to his recorded voicemail, which continued to record as she told her friend how she put the drug in his coffee.

Even though they're going through a divorce, the couple still lived together.

Melissa Goetz faced a judge on charges of attempted murder and poisoning. But Donald Goetz said he doesn't believe the spiked coffee warranted attempted murder charges.

"No, I seriously don't think she was trying to kill me. I think she was trying to cost me my job," Danlad Goetz said.

But investigators said the charges are serious because he could have been killed on the drive to work or while using heavy machinery on the job at a glass company in Orlando.

While he admits the two have had issues with domestic violence, he never expected the incident to happen.

"Especially this, this is the last straw," he said.

Melissa Goetz remains locked up on a $5,000 bond. The pills were part of her prescription, investigators said.

Donald Goetz said he did think it was strange that she had recently stopped drinking coffee with him.
