Brevard Public Schools in need of substitute teachers

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard Public Schools is just a week away from the start of the school year, but the push is still on to hire more substitute teachers.

“It’s going to be critical to have quality substitutes in our classroom,” said school district media and publications coordinator Katherine Allen. “There are going to be instances for quarantine and other things that we haven’t had to deal with before.”

To be a substitute, applicants must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass a background check.

“Principals have said if more than 15% of their staff is out on any given day, they would not be able to run their school effectively,” said Vanessa Skipper, vice president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers. “So that means if more than 15% of teachers at any school are out because they are sick, or they are quarantining, then that means that school will have to shut down if they cannot secure enough substitutes.”
